[CHECKLIST] OCTOBER TO-DO LIST FOR YOUR HOME

The brisk air, falling leaves and farmers markets mean the fall season is officially here. It also means you need to prepare your home before relaxing for the winter season. You can start preparing your home by checking out the following October to-do list.

COMPLETE IN ONE HOUR OR LESS Tidy Up The Mudroom: Freshen up your mudroom by sorting through the mail and putting away the summer items. You should also clean the floors and invest in a fall themed doormat.

Decorate With Natural Elements: Dress your home up with pumpkins, gourds, apples, foliage and branches. You can find the elements at the farmer market or your own backyard.

Prepare For Colder Temperatures: Start preparing for the cold weather by vacuuming the radiators, heating grates and baseboard heaters. Remove and vacuum beneath any covers on the radiators.

Check Your Safety Devices: Check your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors to ensure they are working, and replace any batteries or detectors as needed. You should also check the expiration date on your fire extinguisher to see if it needs to be replaced.

Start Your Holiday Gift List: The holiday season is just around the corner, and this month is the perfect time to start your gift list. It is also a great time to get started on your homemade gifts.

COMPLETE OVER A WEEKEND Rake The Leaves: You may dread raking the leaves in your yard, but you can make it easier on yourself by raking the leaves onto a large plastic tarp. When you are finished, place the tarp in a bag for discard.

Decorate for Halloween: You want to get an early start on gathering your Halloween decor, especially if you are planning to make your own decorations. Start decorating your home for Halloween over the weekend.

Protect Your Outdoor Items: The rain and snow may damage your grill and patio furniture if you do not protect them. You can protect your outdoor items by covering them and storing them under an overhang.

Turn Off The Exterior Water: Turn off the exterior faucets to prevent the pipes from freezing. Disconnect, drain, roll and store your hoses for winter.

COMPLETE THIS MONTH Trim The Dead Tree Limbs: A winter storm causes dead limbs to fall, and this is dangerous for anyone in the area. You can trim the dead limbs yourself, or you can hire a professional to check and trim the limbs.

Clean The Gutter and Downspouts: Once most of the leaves have fallen, start cleaning the rain gutter to avoid any debris from clogging it. You should also check and repair the gutter and downspouts as needed.

Clean The Carpeting and Area Rugs: You can hire a professional cleaning service or spot-clean the carpeting and area rugs on your own. Rotate the rugs before placing them back on the floor.

Maintain The Fireplace or Wood Stove: It is very important to have your fireplace or wood stove inspected and cleaned before lighting a fire this season.
