You want to give a shine to your place and there are so many good products out there to do the job. However, with the intention to shine your house, it is also possible to cause damage to your house due to improper cleaning products or methods used. Some parts of your house might need special care depending on the material. Let’s find out what it is to remember in order to shine and protect your house at the same time.
Flooring
Most floorings are sensitive to harsh scrubbing. You should avoid scrubbing with harsh scouring pads or sponges, but use a soft mop to protect the surface. It is also important to know what your floor is made of.
Hardwood flooring
Hardwood flooring needs specialized hardwood cleaner or water to remove any dust or debris. Please avoid any acidic cleaner, water and vinegar, soap-based cleaners, wax or steam cleaners as these can harm the surface of your hardwood.
Marble flooring
You can take care of your marble flooring with mild soap and water. It is important to avoid acidic cleaner such as vinegar, also avoid Windex or bleach. These can corrode the marble and leave permanent damage.
Vinyl flooring or laminate flooring
You can take care of your vinyl flooring or laminate flooring with general floor cleaner or vinegar water, using a damp mop (it is important not to have the mop too wet! Excessive water can damage your sub-flooring). Using water with some drops of vinegar in it can be a natural way to remove any dust, grease, or debris off your floor. Please avoid steam cleaners or harsh scrubbing for laminate as high temperatures can damage and scrubbing can scratch them.
Also, it is very important to ensure water doesn’t sit on any types of floor surface as this could damage floors regardless of its material. Quickly mop up any excess sitting water.
Countertops
Countertops (in your kitchen and bathrooms) are another sensitive area in your house that is vulnerable to damage depending on what cleaner or method you use. These are the most common countertop materials.
Marble countertops
Quarts countertops
Granite countertops
Laminate countertops
Care instructions for the countertops are quite similar regardless of the countertops. We recommend using mild dish soap and water for all countertops. This is the gentlest way to clean your countertop while protecting the surface. Also, dish soap does a great job removing any kitchen or bathroom grease residue. Please avoid scrubbing with harsh scouring pads, sponges, but use a soft cloth. Microfibre cloth is a great example that is gentle on your countertops and doesn’t leave any residue or ugly trail after it passes through. Lastly and very importantly, please make sure you do not use any acidic products (vinegar, lemon, etc.) or bleach on your countertop regardless of the material. It can seriously damage the surface of your countertop and make permanent stains, marks, or indents.
Hardwood Furniture
Hardwood furniture is a beautiful addition to your house, adding an authentic feeling into your house. Also, hardwood furniture is very durable and can remain its beautiful form for a very long time (you might have seen a handed-down hardwood furniture piece from your grandparents!) However, it is important to clean the furniture in the right way to protect the furniture and prolong the lifespan of the furniture.
We recommend wiping off dust and cleaning the furniture with a damp and soft cloth. Again, microfibre cloth can be a great example as it is very gentle on the surface and doesn’t leave any ugly trail. You can either use specialized hardwood furniture cleaning products or just water is fine too. Please avoid using any chemicals onto your furniture and avoid any hard scrubbing. Please make sure you remove all excessive water from your cloth when wiping, so no water should sit on the furniture. When this happens, you should dry the surface immediately. Sitting water on wood can cause the wood to absorb the water causing permanent damage.
