A rug makes a lovely addition to your home. It adds colour and texture, defines a space when there is an open concept and most importantly adds warmth and coziness to a room – to sum up, it completes a space.
When shopping for rugs you might want to consider the following:
Where to Place It Rugs are great at various places in your house. That said, different types will suit different areas. For hallways and kitchens, where there will be a lot of wear, a more durable material will be a great fit. Bedrooms and living rooms can have more luxurious options.
What Size to Buy For the rug to add the put-together look, it’s important to get the right size. Make sure to measure the room to determine the appropriate size. In the living room, for example, it’s nice to have a rug that’s big enough to go under all your furniture.
What Shape to Get Rectangular is the most popular shape, however, there are other shapes out there. An oval rug can add more pizazz.
Plain or Patterned? Whether you want simply to complete the look of the room or to make a statement, consider the surroundings of the rug. And remember, plain rugs add a nice compliment while patterned rugs add more character.
Natural or Synthetic Fibre Natural fibres, such as wool, cotton, jute, silk, sisal, seagrass and coir are harvested and processed. Of these, the most commonly used is wool because it is the strongest. Most of the others are too rough or too weak to make into rugs. They are more eco-friendly; however, more expensive and are high-maintenance.
Synthetic fibres, such as nylon, polyester and polypropylene, are manufactured from chemical compounds. Eco-friendly out the door with synthetics as they release VOCs – volatile organic compounds; however, they require less maintenance, are more stain resistant and easier on the wallet; therefore, more practical for some.
As far as durability, both natural and synthetic have durable options. Wool in the natural fibre and nylon in the synthetic.
Children and pets are sure to put a lot of mileage on rugs, the more practical choice would be the easier to manage synthetic. A great quality rug that you can enjoy for years to come is well worth the investment.
